A UK mobile number is 07 at home and +44 from abroad. Most failed registrations come from the leading 0, or from a number that isn't a mobile.
+44 The UK's country code, which takes the place of the 0
7700 The mobile prefix: every UK mobile starts 07, and here the 0 is gone
900418 Six digits that pick out the line
Written for UK callers, the number is 07700 900418. In WhatsApp you choose United Kingdom (+44) and type 7700 900418, with no 0 in front: WhatsApp's help page warns that a leading 0 can make registration fail.
Standard WhatsApp registers mobile numbers only, so landlines (01, 02, 03) are out. Even 07 isn't always a mobile: 070 numbers are personal numbers that forward calls, and 076 are pagers.
A UK mobile can move to another network and keep its digits, so 07700 only tells you where the number started. For a code, what counts is a mobile number that can receive SMS, not who runs it.
Ofcom keeps 07700 900000 to 07700 900999 for TV and radio drama and never issues them, which is why this page's samples come from there. A generator's digits are either held by nobody or held by a stranger; a code needs a working number that's yours.
Before you pick a number
When registration fails, the number is the likelier culprit, not the app.
A number from a calling app or a business-line provider runs over the internet, and standard WhatsApp registers mobile numbers only. Bitcall's WhatsApp and Telegram numbers are real mobile numbers.
Free sites show the same British numbers to every visitor and post each message in public, so anyone can read your code, and apps have blocked most of those numbers.
A temporary number is released when your order ends. If an app sends a code weeks later, it goes to whoever has the number then, not to you.
Three ways to get a British number for a code, side by side.
| Bitcall number | UK calling-app number (VoIP) | Free SMS sites | |
|---|---|---|---|
What you're buying | A UK mobile number only you can read | An internet number tied to an app | One public number shared by everyone |
Price | WhatsApp numbers from $0.50 | Varies by app | Free |
To get started | Just an email address | The calling app | Nothing |
Passes WhatsApp's sign-up | Yes | Often turned down | Usually blocked by now |
Private to you | Yes | Yes | ✕ No |
How long you hold it | About 20 minutes per order | While you keep the app | ✕ No |
Temporary number
Most apps ask for a number once. But a new phone, a reinstall or a security check can bring a second code weeks later, and a temporary number is gone by then.
Ordered for one app and held for you for about 20 minutes, long enough for that app's code. When the order ends the number goes back into use.
The app asks for a new codeIt can't reach you
Right for a sign-up. If the app asks for a code again later, that number can't receive it.
To keep a number beyond the first code, use the panel's Long-term Number tab. It rents numbers by country and term, not by app, and the codes of the apps you used it with keep landing in your panel.
The app asks for a new codeIt reaches you
Priced per term, with no automatic refund. The tab lists the countries and terms on offer at the moment, so look for the United Kingdom there before you plan around it.
How it works
Buy a temporary British number in four steps, from the UK or from abroad.
An email address opens the account. Then add balance with a card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto.
In the panel choose WhatsApp, Telegram or another app, then United Kingdom, and order a temporary number. To keep a number longer, look in the Long-term Number tab.
In the app choose United Kingdom (+44) and type the ten digits that follow it, such as 7700 900418, not 07700 900418.
The SMS shows up in your Bitcall panel as it arrives. Paste the code into the app to finish; if none comes, the order is refunded.

Troubleshooting
The messages people meet most, and the fix for each.
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No code arrives | The app can be slow, or may not accept that particular number. | Let the timer run, then ask once more. If the order ends with no code, the amount returns to your balance and you can order another number. |
| "Invalid phone number" | The number was typed with its leading 0, or the country isn't set to United Kingdom (+44). | Select United Kingdom (+44) and type 7700 900418, not 07700 900418. |
| The code won't come while you're outside the UK | You're online from one country and using a number from another. | Turn on a VPN set to the UK before you ask for the code, as the Bitcall panel advises. |
| "Too many attempts, try again later" | The app counted several requests or wrong codes on this number. | Don't keep retrying the same number: wait for the block to end, or order another. |
| The app offers to phone you with the code | Apps offer a call when the SMS is late. | Pick SMS again. Bitcall numbers receive texts that appear in the panel; they don't take calls. |
| The cancel button isn't there yet | Orders can be cancelled once the first 2 minutes have passed. | Wait for the button. If no code has come, the reserved amount is released. |
| A new code weeks after sign-up | A new phone, a reinstall or a security check by the app. | Only a number you still hold can receive it. Check the Long-term Number tab for the United Kingdom, and add a recovery email or PIN in the app. |

Answers before you buy
Sign up at Bitcall with your email, add balance, and order a temporary number for WhatsApp in the panel. In WhatsApp choose United Kingdom (+44), type the ten digits after it with no 0 in front, and the 6-digit code appears in your panel, usually within seconds. For other countries, see WhatsApp numbers.
A temporary number is ordered for one app and held for you for about 20 minutes, long enough for that app's code. You can cancel an order after its first 2 minutes, and if no code has come by the end, the amount goes back to your balance. Afterwards the number is released, so a code an app sends weeks later can't reach it.
Free receive-SMS sites list British numbers, but each one is shared by everyone and every message on it is public, so anyone can read your code and apps have blocked most of them. Bitcall's WhatsApp numbers start at $0.50, and a temporary number costs nothing if the code never arrives.
No. Number generators print digits that nobody holds, or that belong to a stranger, so the code is lost or read by the wrong person. A real verification needs a working mobile number you control: a Bitcall number receives genuine SMS, and no other customer can open its messages while your order runs.
Yes. Neither WhatsApp nor Telegram asks where you live: the number only has to receive the code, and signing up needs just an email. If the code doesn't arrive while you're outside the UK, turn on a VPN set to the UK, as the panel advises. Use a second number within each app's terms; Bitcall does not support spam, fraud or bulk sign-ups.
A temporary number for WhatsApp or Telegram in the UK costs from $0.50, up to $2.00 for higher-quality numbers. Other apps have their own prices, and the panel shows the price before you pay. You top up and pay per number, with no subscription. Developers can also buy numbers by API: see the OTP API docs.
WhatsApp and Telegram have British numbers on sale, and Bitcall covers 500+ apps across 150+ countries. Which of those apps have one at the moment, and their prices, the panel lists before you order, so check it for the app you need.
The numbers sold for WhatsApp and Telegram are real mobile numbers, so non-VoIP, which is why those apps accept them. A number from a calling app or a business-line provider is VoIP, and standard WhatsApp registers mobile numbers only.
Usually the leading 0. A UK mobile is written 07700 900418 at home, but in WhatsApp you pick United Kingdom (+44) and enter 7700 900418, as WhatsApp's help page advises. Landline numbers (01, 02, 03) can't register standard WhatsApp, which takes mobile numbers only. To see what kind of number you have, use the free UK phone number checker.
It can register the app, but it won't stay yours: a temporary number goes back into use after your order, so a later code can't reach it. For a business account you'll keep, use your own SIM, or look in the panel's Long-term Number tab. These numbers receive texts only, not calls, and Bitcall doesn't sell UK business lines.
