About US numbers
A US number is +1 and ten digits. Whether an app texts it a code depends less on the digits than on the kind of line behind them.
+1 Country code, shared with Canada and much of the Caribbean
212 Area code: the city or region
555-0148 The line's own seven digits
The three digits after +1 are an area code: 212 is New York, 415 is San Francisco. Mobile and landline numbers share the same area codes, and for a verification code the city almost never matters.
Many apps look up a number's line type before they send a code. Numbers from apps like Google Voice and TextNow come back as VoIP and are often refused. For WhatsApp and Telegram, Bitcall's US numbers are real mobile SIM numbers.
WhatsApp, Telegram and most apps don't ask where you live, only for a number that can receive their SMS. If the code won't come while you're outside the US, turn on a VPN set to the US before you ask for it.
A number generator's digits belong either to no one, so no SMS reaches them, or to a stranger, who gets your code. 555-0100 to 555-0199 are set aside for films and ads (the samples on this page come from that range) and can't receive an SMS. A code needs a working number that's yours.
Before you pick a number
When a US number fails, the kind of number is usually to blame, not the code.
Free numbers from Google Voice, TextNow and similar apps run over the internet. WhatsApp and many other apps refuse VoIP numbers, or their code never arrives. Bitcall's WhatsApp and Telegram numbers are real mobile SIM numbers.
Free sites hand the same few US numbers to everyone and post every message in public. Anyone can read your code and take the account, and apps blocked most of those numbers long ago.
A one-time number goes back into use after your order. If the app asks for a code months later, you can't receive it. For an account you keep, rent a Long-term Number and add a recovery email.

One code, or the number for weeks
Apps ask for a fresh code when you log in on a new phone, reinstall, or run a security check. A one-time number can't receive it by then; a Long-term Number can.
Ordered for one app and held for you for about 20 minutes: long enough to receive that app's code.

Fine for a quick sign-up. If the app asks for a code again later, that number is gone.
Rent a US number for a set term and it stays yours: codes from the apps you used it with keep landing in your panel.

A US rental runs until its term ends and can't be closed early. You pay per term, with no automatic refund.

Troubleshooting
What each message means and what to do about it.
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The code never arrives | The app can be slow to send it, or may not accept that number. | Wait for the timer and ask once more. If no code comes before the order ends, the reserved amount goes back to your balance: take another number. |
| "This number isn't supported" or "invalid number" | The app reads it as a VoIP or landline number, or the country isn't set to the US. | Check that United States (+1) is selected, then try another number or a higher-quality one. |
| The code won't come while you're outside the US | Your connection and the number are in different countries. | Before you ask for the code, turn on a VPN set to the US, as the Bitcall panel advises. |
| A countdown before you can ask again | Too many code requests, or wrong codes, on the same number. | Wait for the countdown, or take a new number instead of retrying. |
| The app offers to call you instead | Apps offer a call when the SMS hasn't arrived in time. | Stay with SMS: your panel shows the texts the number receives, not calls. |
| You can't cancel an order straight away | An order can be cancelled after its first 2 minutes. | Wait for the cancel button. If no code has arrived, the reserved amount is released. |
| The app asks for a code again weeks later | A new phone, a reinstall or a security check. | Only a number you still have can receive it. Use a Long-term Number for accounts you keep, and add a recovery email. |

Straight answers before you buy
Sign up at Bitcall with your email, top up, and order a one-time US number for WhatsApp in the panel. Enter it in WhatsApp with United States (+1) selected, and the 6-digit code shows up in your panel, usually within seconds. It works the same from India or anywhere else.
No. A made-up number belongs either to no one, so the code goes nowhere, or to a stranger, who receives it. A Bitcall number is a working US number that receives real SMS, and while it's yours, no other customer can read its messages.
Free receive-SMS sites have US numbers, but every message on them is public and the numbers are shared by everyone, so WhatsApp and most apps have blocked them. Bitcall's WhatsApp numbers start at $0.50, and a one-time number costs nothing if the code never arrives.
A temporary (one-time) number is ordered for one app and held for you for about 20 minutes, long enough for its code. A Long-term Number is rented for a term, stays yours until the term ends and receives SMS (up to 25 a day). Rentals are paid per term and aren't refunded automatically; they renew only if you turn on auto-renew, on a number that can be extended. US rentals can't be closed before the term ends.
Not a one-time number: it's ordered for one app, so order one per app. A Long-term Number is rented by country and term, not by app, so while it's yours you can use it to verify the apps you need.
Not the ones we sell for WhatsApp and Telegram: those are real mobile SIM numbers, so non-VoIP, which is why they pass where Google Voice or TextNow numbers fail. A number from a calling app is VoIP, and many services check for that before they send a code.
Yes. WhatsApp works with a +1 number wherever you are; the number only has to receive the registration code. If the code doesn't arrive, turn on a VPN set to the US before you request it, and rent the number if you'll keep the account. More on numbers for WhatsApp.
A one-time US number for WhatsApp, Telegram or Google costs from $0.50, up to $2.00 for higher-quality numbers. Other apps are priced about the same, and the panel shows the price before you pay. There's no subscription: you top up and pay per number, and Long-term Numbers are priced by term. Developers can order the same numbers through the OTP API.
Yes. Indian (+91) numbers for WhatsApp and app OTPs work the same way: see Indian numbers for WhatsApp and OTP.
You can use a second number if you follow each app's terms. WhatsApp, for example, asks for your current number and expects you to keep it up to date, so rent the number for an account you'll keep. Bitcall does not support spam, fraud or bulk sign-ups.
