How to check a phone number in the UK

It reads the UK numbering plan
Every UK range has a job: 01 and 02 are areas, 03 is UK-wide, 07 is mostly mobiles, 080 is freephone and 09 is premium rate. The checker matches the number against those ranges, using Google's libphonenumber data.
You get the answer at once
Valid or not, the type, the area or the network it was issued to, and the number in +44, E.164 and national format. Nothing is sent to a server.

What the first digits of a UK number tell you, and what it costs to call from a UK phone.

Why the prefix doesn't tell you the network
UK mobile numbers can move between networks: a customer texts PAC to 65075, and the switch happens within one working day, keeping the same number. So an 07 prefix only shows the network the number was first issued to.

Don't call back numbers you don't know
Especially overseas numbers, and 070, 076, 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers, which can cost more than you expect. Genuine callers leave a message or call again.

UK phone number checker FAQ
UK number types, costs and what the checker can and can't tell you.
Type it into the checker at the top of this page. A UK number has 10 digits after the 0 (11 with it), with a few older 9-digit exceptions, and must be in a range that's in use. The result tells you if it's valid and, if not, why.
UK mobile numbers start with 07: 071 to 075 and 077 to 079, plus 07624 on the Isle of Man. Two 07 ranges are not mobiles: 070 is for personal numbers and 076 is for pagers. As a UK mobile number checker, the checker shows the type straight away.
A UK-wide number for organisations, such as public services and charities. Calling an 03 number costs no more than calling an 01 or 02 number, and it counts towards the inclusive minutes of your plan.
Yes: 0800 and 0808 numbers are free to call from UK mobiles and home landlines. Business lines should check with their provider, and calls from abroad are not free.
Personal "follow-me" numbers that forward calls to another phone. They are not mobiles, though they look like them. Your own provider sets the price, and some charge well above mobile rates: Ofcom warns that 070 numbers are used in missed-call scams.
Ofcom keeps 07700 900000 to 07700 900999 for TV and radio drama, so they are never given to anyone. There are drama ranges for landlines too, such as 020 7946 0xxx in London. The checker tells you when a number comes from one of them.
The checker shows the network the number was first issued to. UK mobile numbers can move to another network and keep their digits, so the network today can be different. A live HLR lookup shows the network it's on now, from €0.0038 per number.
Replace the leading 0 with +44: 020 7946 0123 becomes +44 20 7946 0123. For systems that need E.164, write it without spaces: +442079460123. The checker gives you all three formats to copy.
Not with this checker, and Bitcall doesn't show names or addresses. On a BT landline, 1471 tells you the last number that called you. If a call worries you, don't call it back and report it: see the section above.
The checker doesn't rate numbers for spam, but the type is a clue: take care with 070, 076, 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers and unexpected overseas calls. Forward scam texts to 7726, and report fraud to Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or to Police Scotland on 101.
Ofcom's advice is not to call back numbers you don't recognise, particularly from overseas, and to take care with 070, 076, 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers. Genuine callers leave a voicemail or call again.
